At this point, the Government of Sri Lanka looks forward to sustainable economic, social and cultural development that ensures a bright future for the country. Government sector, specially provincial government has a vital role to play towards achieving this aim. Improving public sector service delivery to enhance quality of life should be one of the major challenges. Therefore, preparing government officials to make these challenges and train them in appropriate manner with international best practices in every sector could be prime objective to achieve in the country goal.
Uva province economy mainly based on Agriculture sector, but huge potential to develop tourism sector as province is one of the most popular tourist destination in Sri Lanka. Recognizing the critical importance of sustainable agriculture sector and agro tourism in the province, Uva Province Provincial Council of Sri Lanka has requested Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand to design and implement a customized international exposure study visit program on “Agriculture Systems, Agro Tourism and Tourist Industry in Vietnam” in order to upgrading the knowledge of modern commercial agriculture as well as agro based industry and tourism for the senior officials in Uva province in December 2011.
The delegation consists of Governor of Uva province, Chairmen of Provincial People Committee, provincial leaders, Directors of Provincial Department of Health, Agriculture, Tourism and other key officials of the Province.
On 13 December 2011, the delegation arrived in Ho Chi Minh city before they visited An Giang and Cần Thơ province to get understandings of experiences in the field of agriculture based ecological tourism in these provinces.
On 14 December 2011 the delegation visited Cần thơ province and explore Cái răng floating market – an effective agriculture based tourism model of the province. Here, delegates have experienced the trading of agriculture farmers on boats - a form of exchanging goods and agriculture products in river network in the southern west region of Vietnam, which is such a novel experience of Srilanka people.
On 15 December 2011 the delegation visited and worked with An Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. In this meeting, the delegation has been received by Deputy Director of An Giang DARD and been introduced about the agriculture development of the province, challenges and opportunities. The delegation also had field visits to understand different agriculture models in the provinces, livelihood of farmers and learn about the agriculture based tourism.
On 16 December 2011 the delegation has been led by An Giang DARD staff to visit Trà Sư Mangrove – a famous eco-tourism destination of An Giang Province. The delegation has been impressive of this wetland forest where ecosystem, fauna and flora system are being protected for a diversified and balance environment.
The final day of the study tour, the Delegation has visited and worked with Southern Institute of Water Resources Research. During this meeting, both sides have exchanged experiences and issues relating to operation of the Institute and explore cooperation opportunities in the future.
During the closing meeting of the study tour in Vietnam, Sri Lankan delegation from Uva highly appreciated the results of visits to Việt Nam, especially the strategy for development of agriculture based ecological tourism for improved income of farmers and local agriculture production. The Delegation wish to enhance cooperation with CPIM. The delegation expressed sincere thanks to CPIM, Vietnam Academy for Water Resources and local stakeholders who supported and contributed to the success of the study tour of senior officials of Sri Lanka
